The Kafue Lion Project

“Lions are in trouble across Africa, with these great cats having been wiped out in over 80% of their historical range, and numbers dropping from as many as 200,000 to less than 30,000 in less than 100 years. Zambia is one of only 7 countries estimated to have a population in excess of 1,000 wild lions, and is thus of strategic importance to the future of the species. At 22,400km2, the country’s Kafue National Park is a potential stronghold for lions, not just in Zambia, but in the southern African region as a whole.

The Kafue Lion Project has therefore been established to investigate the conservation status of lions in this magnificent wilderness, as well as to identify and evaluate potential threats to the species. Click here to read more.
